A Mount School coach joins Dream Team of Olympians

A Mount School coach will form part of a rowing Dream Team of Olympians this Saturday, 18 October 2014, in the US's most prestigious rowing race, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

Gillian Lindsay, Director of Sport and Wellbeing at The Mount and an Olympic silver medallist, joins a boat of eight rowers - who have a total of 12 Olympic medals between them – for the ultimate two-day rowing competition. The Head of the Charles is the world’s largest regatta renowned for attracting the world’s best crew teams. Over the weekend, more than 11,000 athletes from around the globe will compete in 56 different race events, watched by as many as 400,000 spectators. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the regatta.

Gillian said, "We arrive in the States on Thursday late afternoon and race Saturday mid-afternoon. We will travel with two of the country's top oarsmen who are also looking to win their respective events.  These two crews include Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Garry Herbert MBE (BBC commentator and Olympic Gold Medallist) and many more highly successful Olympic oarsmen.  

"Our race (over 4km) includes the current USA Olympic women's team, a former Dutch International Olympic line up and a very strong Canadian crew who have won our category for the last 5 years!  We are looking to break the record (just over 17 minutes) which has stood

Adrian Ellison - cox.  Olympic Gold Medallist 1984 (LA).  Coxed Sir Steve Redgrave to his 1st Olympic Gold Medal

Catherine Bishop - Olympic Silver Medallist 2004, World Champion 2003

Katherine Grainger - Olympic Gold Medallist, 3 x Olympic Silver Medallist, 6 time World Champion

Kate Slatter - Olympic Gold Medallist, Olympic Silver Medallist, World silver and bronze medallist

Gillian Lindsay - Olympic Silver Medallist, World Champion, World Silver Medallist

Phillipa Cross - GB Team Member 1992 – 1996

Kate MacKenzie - GB Team Member 1996 – 2000

Rachel Stanhope - GB Lightweight silver medallist 
Jo White - Olympic Team Member 1992-1996

At The Mount the aim is to encourage a genuine enthusiasm in physical activity to maintain girls' participation throughout their lives.  A broad range of sports and activities are covered to ensure every student finds their niche and can enjoy sport recreationally or competitively.
