Feathered Friends appear at Bootham Junior School for British Science Week

17 March 2016

During British Science Week, Nursery and Reception at Bootham Junior School were delighted to find that the eggs they had been carefully incubating were beginning to hatch.  The children were able to watch as three little yellow chicks emerged from their eggs, dried off their feathers and began to wobble around on slightly unsteady legs.  Head teacher, Helen Todd, said, ‘Experiences like this are so valuable for young children.  Without them even realising, the children have been engaged in ‘real’ science.  The nursery and reception classes have been observing, drawing and recording their findings and we have even had some lively discussions about keeping chicken on the school menu!’  The chicks will stay in school for the next few weeks before heading off to live on a local farm.
