Breckenbrough School

Thirsk YO7 4EN

Breckenbrough has been helping boys who have suffered from emotional, social and behavioural problems, leading to a failure to thrive in mainstream education, since 1934.  Today it is particularly effective with boys diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and over 75% of our pupils have this diagnosis. Others may have a diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia and/or dyscalculia. All boys have academic potential, a particular talent or skill and all want to succeed educationally and socially.

Breckenbrough prides itself on recognising, developing and then celebrating the good in everyone. We recognise that our pupils need time and space to help them better understand and cope with the pressures of education and social situations.

Breckenbrough provides full boarding (38 weeks), weekly boarding and day placements. Post-16 provision has been developed recently and we now cater for boys between the ages of 9 and 19. All boys come to Breckenbrough supported by a Statement of Special Educational Need from their Local Authority. The school is a Quaker Charitable Trust and the Trustees are appointed by Quakers in Yorkshire. Breckenbrough is located in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside which is fully utilised in wide-ranging outdoor education activities including climbing, mountain biking and kayaking. The emphasis here is on personal challenge, taking responsibility for each other, problem solving and leadership skills.

Boys are offered personalised programmes of learning and are given additional support as required. The majority of pupils follow the core curriculum with the expectation that they will take at least 8 GCSEs. In the sixth form boys can follow a wide range of courses through our partnership with York College as well as studying for A levels. We focus on students acquiring skills which support and encourage increasing independence.

The work of the school is underpinned by a powerful ethos of conflict resolution which provides a therapeutic environment. The experienced staff focus on listening before helping a pupil to find a constructive way forward.  The majority of our pupils move from Breckenbrough into further and higher education and may continue to be supported by our active Aftercare officer. After talking to us you are most welcome to visit to see if Breckenbrough could help your son.
